Theoretical Context - Renaissance

Renaissance art was a distinct style of art in Italy in the spanning from the 1300's to 1600's. Some characteristics of the renaissance art period are realism, emotional context and complex compositions. It was also the period of naturalism and individualism. Michelangelo and Donatello are two key artists of the renaissance period. It gave life to anew age of art, technology and exploration and was a key event in European History.

Looking at the works of Renaissance artists has helped me develop my understanding of portraiture as a whole. The desire to recreate the beauty of the face and the unique aspect of each individual is something I have learnt from looking at this movement, in addition to an understanding of composition and an appreciation for painting.
