Theoretical Context - Figurative Art

Figurative art is a representation of any object or person from a source. Figurative artists include those such as Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Pablo Picasso. It is more expressive than modern realism which I feel is more in line with my work. Looking at figurative work and artists have really influenced my work and sparked many ideas for my project.

Initially, I wanted to stick to realistic portraiture, but researching this type of work pushed me to develop my work into something more exciting. Looking at artists such as Freud and Loribelle Spirovski gave me the idea to distort my portraits in order to enhance them.
